The goal of dentistry is to make sure we can keep our teeth for as long as we can, but unfortunately, that is not always possible. For a number of reasons teeth sometimes need to be removed and this is done through a tooth extraction procedure. The procedure itself can vary depending on the condition of the tooth at the time of removal and we'll explore these below, but for more information reach out to our Wilmington, DE, dentist, Dr. Edward Weinstein.
How the Procedure Is Performed
For most cases, a tooth is extracted using a special tool called a dental extraction elevator to carefully loosen the tooth from its socket. Then it is usually extracted using a pair of forceps.
But if the tooth has not erupted above the gum line, or if it's too weakened, or it could cause damage to surrounding tissues then a surgical extraction may be needed. A small incision in the gums may need to be made to access the entirety of the tooth, which could be first broken and then each piece carefully removed.
Why Teeth Are Extracted
Many of us will have our wisdom teeth extracted in adulthood, and this is usually necessary when these erupt at an awkward angle that puts us at risk of complications.
Damaged teeth may also need to be extracted if other conservative treatments were either not possible or successful, such as root canal or crowns. Teeth can become injured by either injury or decay, and the same bacteria that can harm our teeth can also lead to gum disease. When in the advanced stage, gum disease threatens the support structures of our teeth, and once this happens our teeth may become loose and they may require extraction.
